05/09: Iceland - The Volcano God's are Angry

05/09:

The next morning we woke up and got ready to head out for the day with a nutritious meal of hot dogs. I think it took us a while before Courtney finally looked out the ginormous windows and spotted the incredibly obvious pillar of black ash rising above the horizon. We figured it had to be either the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull (pronounced "Steve") or the smoke monster from Lost.
It was fitting that we spotted the volcano early on since that was one of our planned destinations for the day. On our way out we snapped a couple photos of the crew at the cabin.

Normal Photo:
Almost normal except Tumi:
Now everybody's getting into it!
Wooo 1!
Wooo 2!
After taking far too many photos we headed out. Since apparently doctors don't recommend babies inhaling a bunch of volcanic ash, we dropped Mary Frances and Elsa off at a hella cool cafe in the town of Hella.
Our first stop on the day trip was the stunning Seljalandsfoss (ugh, another waterfall???).

The waterfall allows you to walk all the way behind it and around.

After we had our fill we went off further towards the volcano. As we got closer and closer things started to feel differently. The beautiful weather turned to gray and dark, and a small amount of rain started to fall as we drove. We also got a glimpse of roads that had been washed out from the melted glacier that chewed through the countryside. And as we came more into the direction the wind has largely been blowing since the eruption we saw the coating of black ash everywhere.
Jumping photo? Perhaps slightly inappropriate but it was either that or I was going to do an ash angel.
We spent maybe 5 minutes out of the car, and despite the occasional wind that kicked up a little ash I didn't think much of it. However afterward I was finding ash in my hair, on my skin, in my ears. In short, it was pretty gross.

We continued driving towards Skogafoss, a beautiful waterfall, as you can tell from the photo I shamelessly stole.
However the sight we saw was far less inspiring:

After we wrapped up some of the beautiful and powerful sights in South-Western Iceland we headed back to Hella, feeling hella tired and helly ashy. We met Mary Frances and Elsa and recounted our tale. Elsa however was far more enthralled by Tumi's good choice of style.
From there we rolled back to Reykjavik. However, our adventures were not done for the day. Oh no loyal readers.

Wow, the Skogafoss pics are quite dramatic: they look like they were taken in black-and-white. (Ironically, I remember Skogar and Skogafoss being the greenest places in Iceland when I visited a few years back ...)
