01/20: France Day 2 - Auvers-Sur-Oise

We woke the next day and had another very European breakfast, something which I am totally addicted to.

A funny thing that Denis said about French people (to be found on whatfrenchpeoplelike.blogspot.com) is that they start thinking about what they're having for dinner right when they wake up. So yes, we ate very well. At any rate, after our breakfast we headed to the town of Auvers-Sur-Oise, which was just a ten minute drive from Stephanie and Denis' home. This town was painted quite frequently by Van Gogh, and is actually the location of his current residence. The painting below is called L'Eglise D'Auvers-Sur-Oise.

This was our first view of the town:

Here's the church he painted frequently.

We then went to a museum on the impressionist movement in an old chateau. Rather than focusing on the art, it was more about the ideas behind it and the culture of the era. My mother was the photographer for the following photo.

One thing that was mentioned that when the impressionist movement picked up, the world was in a state of change. Trains were becoming more common as a form of transportation, and people began to be crossing the country side at a landscape blurring speed. A fair amount of paintings of the period were of trains, or as if looking out a window. I thought it was an interesting description.

To hammer this point home they had a video that played where you could sit on a train, and the video moved by giving the effect of watching the paintings in motion.

Playin' it cool

My mother never goes anywhere without her matched luggage.
